The World’s To-Do List for Disability Inclusion

Adopted by the UN in 2015, these 17 goals pledge to “Leave No One Behind.” For the first time, persons with disabilities are explicitly included in global development targets.

1. Goal 4: Quality Education

(Focus: Inclusive Schools) “Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive.” (Target 4.a)

  • The Promise: The goal is not just to get children into school, but to ensure they are included in the learning process.

  • Key Targets:

    • Target 4.5: Eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities.

    • Inclusive Environment: Schools must provide safe, non-violent, inclusive, and effective learning environments for all.

(Focus: Real Jobs, Real Pay) “Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all… including persons with disabilities.” (Target 8.5)

  • The Promise: You have the right to a real job with a real contract—not just “charity work” or volunteering.

  • Key Targets:

    • Equal Pay: The goal mandates equal pay for work of equal value. It is illegal to pay a person with a disability less simply because of their condition.

    • Productivity: The focus is on “productive employment,” recognizing that with the right tools (assistive tech), PWDs can contribute significantly to the economy.

(Focus: Social & Political Power) “Empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all… irrespective of disability.” (Target 10.2)

  • The Promise: This goal attacks the root causes of discrimination (stigma, bad laws, and exclusion).

  • Key Targets:

    • Political Voice: Promoting the representation of persons with disabilities in decision-making (e.g., voting, running for office).

    • Social Inclusion: Ensuring that PWDs are not hidden away but are visible, active members of the community.
